I think it began as defiance. Or maybe pure laziness. Regardless, once it got past my ear lobes I was committed. An ex-girlfriend remarked, “I don’t know why you grew your hair out.” Me neither. But here we are over a decade in with the ‘flow’.
I was about 27 when I let it flow. Strange age. Jim, Jimi, Janis & Kurt all passed on at 27; leaving powerful yet tragic legacies. Saturn takes approximately 27 years to return to its natal position in your astrological birth chart marking your first major life transition. Maybe it foretells the end of an early marriage, or career change, or maybe you look in the mirror and say, “F*ck, am I losing my hair!?”
Not me. Magnesium in my squirt gun. Good hair. My mother cried when she cut it for the first time, when I was about 3. Who am I to spite the wishes of the hair Gods? So I let it grow; much to the chagrin of exes: girlfriend and music manager. Over time the locks slowly became part of my identity.
I came to believe hair is power. Not Samson power. Spiritual power. I heard the stories of Native Americans who claimed they lost their keen sense of connection to their environment after being forced to cut their hair by American GIs. I’ve read about Black Americans revolutionizing the country with natural hair worn loud and proud. Hair defined Rock ‘n Roll and its challenge to the status quo. Hair is power!
Yet, after my most recent birthday I have the desire to cut it all off. Wait! Don’t we need all the hair we can get right now!? Long hair with its connection to the natural world. Strong hair with its ability to stand up to division and hate. Wild hair to do away with habits that no longer serve us.
Could it be my hair is directly responsible for the raps I’ve conjured up over the years? If I cut it all off, will I lose my powers of expression!? The ‘flow’ may very well have a link to strength and spirit. If so, just in case the urge gets the better of me, it’s imperative I share with you this ‘4GOD’ demo. A spirited retrospective over more Guala production that arrives at the understanding that accomplishment and failure both lend itself to inevitable growth. So, whatever happens, it’ll grow back, right?
