I remember saying I'd never start a family so I'd be impervious to the mafia. You know how the protagonist refuses to accept a nefarious task from a bad guy only to be sent a photo of their child entering the kindergarten classroom? Well, my daughter arrived in June and I’m back on the road!
Ha! I’ve long equated the music industry to mafia work. Comparisons aside this past cluster of shows was actually enjoyable. Through a largely chronological set of ‘best of’ raps from AITBA, Pabst & Jazz, Flowers on the Weekend + more, we intertwined Joey’s drums with Martronimous’ tantric trumpets to bring to life an encouraging set about self discovery. (I call Martron’s trumpets tantric because boobs got flashed in back to back shows! It’s gotta be the trumpet, right!?) Through the Mountain West and Southern California we were able to test out new material while seeing “people I ain’t got at in a minute.”
This past trip also featured a stop in Salt Lake City, UT which we used as an opportunity to get up with Andrew aka Heather Grey. If that name sounds familiar it’s because last year we collaborated on an EP titled ‘Why’s It So Grey Out?’ built around gloomy observations about the state of my external world.
HG and I have been working on a follow up to ‘Why’s It So Grey Out?’ with a much more enlivened series of recordings. Its working title is ‘Temporary Heaven.’ More on that later!
Developing a healthy relationship with the demands of the road has allowed me to bring a balance to my life that didn’t exist in a previous chapter. I’m able to be present with an audience that has supported my expedition for years and return home to cherish my time recreating Interstellar with Edie while learning the lyrics to Donovan’s ‘The Mandolin Man and His Secret’ to help her get to sleep. Believe it or not I’m actually looking forward to our upcoming shows in Texas!
